Jessica Soedirgo an Associate Professor (UD1) in the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. She hold a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto. Prior to starting at the UvA, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University.
Her research is motivated by an interest in ethnic and religious conflict, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. She has also published on qualitative methods, including on topics on fieldwork and reflexivity. Her book, forthcoming in May 2027 at Cornell University Press, is titled The Threat of Small Groups: Visibility and Violence in Indonesia. It asks why very small groups become targets of state repression and mobilization despite their economic and political insignificance. The dissertation upon which this book is based was awarded the 2022 Aaron Wildavsky Best Dissertation Award by the Religion and Politics section of the American Political Science Association.
